State of higher education

Only one Pakistani university listed in top 500 in the world

PESHAWAR: Fourteen universities of Pakistan have been able to get positions in the world university ranking 2020. Among these universities, only one is listed in top 500 universities. It is indeed a question mark on higher education of Pakistan. Several factors are responsible for the substandard performance in the higher education sector. Previous governments failed to give adequate attention and support to higher education. Furthermore, plagiarism has ruined students’ creativity. What is appalling is that teachers suggest their students to plagiarise in such a way to avoid being caught.

Research has not been given priority which has exacerbated the matter. As a result, students are getting useless degrees.

Recently, the government has reduced the budget of higher education due to a severe economic crisis. As a result, research work has been stopped. The apathy of the incumbent government to higher education is alarming. There’s no denying that education plays an important role in the development of a nation. Hence, the importance of higher education should not be ignored for the sake of the economy. Higher education needs to be given priority in universities.
