Greed and corruption

Harmful and corrupt activities such as bribery and money laundering have profoundly pierced our social culture.

KARACHI: Harmful and corrupt activities such as bribery and money laundering have profoundly pierced our social culture.

These heinous acts affect the very fabrics of social life leading to greater class division. It is like a cancer that has spread across and attacked our country. What we do not realise is that it is literally killing us. The poor are dying and the rich remain wealthy taking advantage of the facilities our society has to offer. The poor are scorned and deemed a useless part of society. They are shunned to the curb and left on their own. It is the impact of keen desire for materialistic gain. Our greed has consumed us.

What is upsetting is that these acts are prevalent everywhere, where every other person is ready to eat each other over power or money. We claim to be an Islamic country but our deeds paint a different picture, even though there are strict Islamic laws which prohibit the Muslims to do such act. Our moral and social values are in complete chaos and we have absolutely no idea what to do about it. There should be severe punishment for bribery. They must be sentenced by the Islamic courts.

I urge the authorities concerned to take necessary measures towards the eradication of corruption and bribery. Corruption is eating into the vitals of our nation. Without curbing corruption we cannot make progress in any field. Corruption and other harmful practices have seeped into all spheres of national life. The corrupt elements should be given a deterrent punishment so that others do not dare to indulge in sleaze.
