Punjab police reforms

The history of the Punjab police is full of such dark events, be it Model Town or Sahiwal tragedy

LARKANA: The recent mysterious death of a mentally-challenged person, Salahuddin, in police custody and the alleged misbehavior by an ASI with old woman has again dragged the Punjab police in the spotlight with severe criticism.

The history of the Punjab police is full of such dark events, be it Model Town or Sahiwal tragedy. Incidents like these question the traits of professionalism in the Punjab police force that aims to serve the citizens rather to harm them.

When PM Imran Khan was in the Opposition, he left no opportunity to brag and boast of the KPK police reforms and promised to introduce the same all over the country, once in power. Now that he has become the PM but he has yet done nothing about the Punjab police. Regular training and workshops must be organised to enhance the professional skills of the police force, with a policy of reward and punishment. Recruitments should be based on merit. If required measures are not taken, then the cycle will repeat itself.
