ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Air Force Day was observed across the country on Saturday with national zeal to pay homage to the martyrs of PAF who rendered the ultimate sacrifice for defence of the country during the Pakistan-India war in 1965.

Addressing the Martyrs’ Day ceremony at Air Headquarters in Islamabad, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan said, “Pakistan Air Force is ever ready to protect the blue skies of the country.”

A notable event of the 1965 war was that Pakistan Air Force flying ace Muhammad Mahmood Alam shot down five planes of India in less than a minute.

Air chief Khan said that the PAF’s glaring victory against the enemy showed the world the capability of our Shaheens.

“Sacrifices of our forefathers demand unity and patriotism amongst us,” he said.

On the Kashmir issue, he said: “We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Kashmiri brothers in their struggle for the right to self-determination.”

Later, the air chief marshal laid floral wreath and offered Fateha at the Martyrs’ Monument. Principal staff officers and a large number of Airmen attended the ceremony.

In connection with PAF Day, a wreath laying ceremony was also held at the grave of the country’s youngest Nishan-e-Haider Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed in Karachi.

A PAF Contingent led by Air Vice Marshal Ghulam Abbas Ghumman, Air Officer Commanding, Southern Air Command, offered Fateha and laid floral wreath at the grave of Rashid Minhas Shaheed on behalf of the air chief.

The contingent paid homage to the young pilot who sacrificed his life in defence of the motherland, showing exceptional courage and determination.

SAPM on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said, “Air Force Day reminds us of the bravery and courage of Shaheens of the air force who with their spirit of belief made the enemy run away.”

She tweeted: “Rashid Minhas and MM Alam are the symbol of Pakistan Air Force in the world.”
