Many people like to fly and reach their destinations quickly, while many prefer to drive. A road trip can be an adventure, as you approach your destination mile by mile. To avoid surprises and accidents, you should plan your journey with due care. Having driven across several Nordic and Baltic countries I made many observations to manage unexpected situations. The following checklist should help you plan a successful road trip.

First aid-kit: A convenient and well-stocked first-aid kit is very important. Purchase one before starting your trip. Administering first aid is not rocket science, but a kit could save a life in an emergency. Check the expiry dates on the items included and store the kit in a cool area of your car.

Fire extinguisher: A few EU member countries have mandated fire extinguishers in the car. Different sizes are available in-store and they can quickly contain a fire before emergency services reach the site.

Spare tyre: Check the spare tyre to ensure it has the appropriate pressure and is in good condition, including the tread depth. The required information depends on the size and quality of the tyre and can be checked online. My experience revealed that the spare tyre in my car is the most neglected safety item. Many car manufacturers in Europe and beyond are not providing spare tyres now and have replaced it with a repair kit. You should educate yourself about the tyre’s condition and the repair kit’s usage.

Seatbelts: All passengers should buckle their seatbelts before the vehicle starts moving. In a collision, seatbelts can save lives and reduce injuries. Moreover, unless the seatbelt is not fastened the associated airbag will not inflate.

Speed limits: Following speed limits is important to avoid accidents and unwarranted situations, including hefty fines. In most European countries, speeding fines are calculated according to your annual income. Higher the income, higher will be the fine.

GPS navigation device: Whether you’re travelling in your home country or abroad, an updated navigation device is important. It can help avoid speeding violations by providing warnings and spotting automatic speed surveillance. A GPS also calculates the fastest route to reach the destination. Most devices provide 3D maps, voice support, and options for multiple countries. In my experience, relying on Google Maps on my cellphone was irritating because of the small screen. It drained my phone’s battery and didn’t spot the speed cameras on the highways.

Weather conditions: Check at least a seven-day weather forecast before you hit the road. Sometimes, the weather turns hostile, and you should be prepared to handle these changes while driving on the highway, especially with children. Ensure the windscreen wipers are in good condition, and you have the contact numbers for emergency services and roadside assistance. Avoid driving if its raining or snowing. Instead, stop at a nearby fuel station or parking lot and enjoy a cuppa with your travel buddies.

Drinking water: Water-borne diseases are common in developing and emerging countries, especially when travelling with children. Keep refilling your water stock at fuel stations or highway restaurants.

Social media posts: There is no harm in sharing your experiences on social media while taking a road trip with your family and friends (if you are not driving). Consider this a blessing, as they update your near and dear ones and they can reach you easily in an emergency.

With proper planning, your road trip can be a success. The experience allows you to interact with people and sharpens your planning skills. So, what are you waiting for? Create a WhatsApp group, review this checklist, and hit the road!
