Time and time again, the Tomb Raider star lights up our screens as formidable female forces such as Maleficent in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, as well as Thena in Marvel's upcoming The Eternals. But, the actor-director revealed that, just like many of us, she sometimes doesn’t feel strong at all, reported Vogue.
“I’m like everybody and... especially these last few years haven’t been the easiest and I haven’t felt very strong,” Jolie revealed during a Disney press conference. Of course, we can only assume she was alluding to her high-profile divorce from Troy star Brad Pitt in 2016 after 12 years of being together, including two years of marriage.
“There’s something when you’re not feeling very strong, where you push yourself,” she continued. For Jolie, playing incredible characters allows her to tap back into her own strength and emotional well being. “And I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity to play these kind of characters, that pull out every bit of strength I have and that remind me that I can be strong.”
Angelina Jolie believes the world needs more wicked women
When Jolie joins the Marvel franchise for the first time she will be joined by a stellar cast, including Natalie Portman, who is set to play the first female Thor. The Eternals revolves around a race of super powered immortals who dominated planet Earth over 35,000 years ago.
The training for the role has been anything but easy for Jolie. “Sometimes you really feel low and you [have] got to pull it back up,” she continued. “Right now, for Thena, I’m having to do so much training and she’s so positive, so healthy and she’s so aggressive that I’m often like, ‘This is not going to work.’ But, you’ve got to push yourself.”
In recent years the actor has not only written and directed a number of acclaimed films but has also carried out many philanthropic projects, including helping refugees with the UN. She has now launched her own YouTube channel to share her passionate speeches on humanity, including her keynote address at the 2019 General Assembly Ministerial Meeting.
