Honour killing

Letter August 25, 2019
Men are supposed to treat women most humanely

TURBAT: In Pakistan, honour killing is quite common. It is also clear that women are subjected to various kinds of abuse and persecution in the country. Domestic violence, acid attacks and honour killing are the most common issues that Pakistanis women face in this patriarchal society. The frequency of honour killing has constantly been increasing. It occurs when a female is murdered for the crime of bringing shame to the family. However, quite ironically it is men who bring dishonour and shame through the act of killing their own blood. The most affected provinces are Balochistan and Sindh. Women are not mere objects that can be treated shamefully. They are the torchbearers of all nations. If Pakistani men cannot respect the rights of women, then there is no hope for our society. I urge the people of Pakistan to treat the women in your homes respectfully. Women have not been created for the purpose of making gol rotis.

I urge the Government of Pakistan to stop such acts from being carried out and enact laws that can act as a deterrent. Men are supposed to treat women most humanely. Society overall should respect women. Media can play a significant role in promoting women’s rights.
