Unknown assailants flee after opening fire at police officials at toll plaza in Old Sabzi Mandi area

ISLAMABAD: Two policemen were martyred and another one sustained serious bullet wounds when two unidentified armed assailants opened indiscriminate fire at their vehicle in Old Sabzi Mandi area of the city on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

Police officials, identified as Khurram Shehzad and Saqlain Saghir Haider, died on the spot while Constable Jahanzaib was taken to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in critical condition.

The attackers were on foot, who fled away after the incident, according to the officials.

The policemen were on their routine duty to scan explosives in the vehicles crossing the toll plaza, they added.

Taking notice of the incident, Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Amir Zulfiqar Khan constituted two teams, one each under the SSP CTD and SP Investigations, to bring the culprits behind the attack to book at the earliest.

The IGP directed the senior police officials to utilise all resources to arrest the suspects.
