WSSP disposes of 12,774 tonnes of waste on Eid

Waste dumped in Shamshato landfill as operation continues on fourth day

PESHAWAR: The chief sanitation service of Peshawar has disposed of around collected and disposed of 12,774 tonnes of waste from the 43 urban union councils of the provincial capital during the three days of Eidul Azha.

The cleanliness operation continued for the fourth day on Thursday to remove animal remains and offal.

According to data released by Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP), some 2538 sanitation staff participated in the special “EidulAdha Cleanliness Campaign”. This included 1,232 sweepers, 776 sanitation staff (Kattaqullis), 86 assistants, 323 drivers, 31 supervisors and 50 municipal inspectors.

The WSSP deployed over 489 vehicles, including which 20 mini-rickshaws for narrow streets in inner-city, 147 Suzuki dumpers, 10 small and 20 large tractors, 42 compactors, five shovels, three trucks and 25 arm roll trucks. A further 31 shovels, five excavators, 34 small and 45 large tractors along with trolleys, 88 dumpers were rented.

They collected around 6,505 tonnes of waste on the first day of Eid from all four zones of the city. On the second day, 4,127 tonnes of waste was collected while 2,143 tonnes of waste was collected on the third day.

The breakdown of the data showed that on the first day, 1,329 tonnes of waste was collected from Zone ‘A’, 2,867 from Zone ‘B’, 1,406 from Zone ‘C’ and 902 from Zone ‘D’. On the second day, this fell to 780 tonnes from Zone ‘A’, 1,641 from Zone ‘B’, 2,296 from Zone ‘C’ and 510 from Zone ‘D’.

On the third day, 437 tonnes was collected from Zone ‘A’, 814 from Zone ‘B’, 490 from Zone ‘C’ and 402 from Zone ‘D’.

Before Eid, the sanitation company had set up temporary transfer stations across the city for locals to dump sacrificial animal waste. This waste was then taken to the Shamshato landfill site in trucks for disposal. Moreover, an awareness campaign was launched before the Eid where meetings were held with elected representatives at the local and provincial level, teachers, ulemas and traders.
