Depression among students

Letter August 09, 2019
Talk to your children and try to understand them

KARACHI: It is an undeniable fact that depression is widespread. Students suffer greatly from this. Most people don’t consider depression as a form of illness. Rather, they try and shrug the problem away by telling those suffering from it to feel better. If only it were that easy. Most people that suffer from it are unaware until they are diagnosed by a psychologist. We need to shed light on this as it has become a rampant issue all over the world.

The most affected from depression are young people, mostly students. Students with different intellectual abilities are expected, by teachers and parents, to abide to an educational system that caters to a specific intellectual class. They are pushed hard and forced to achieve high grades. Art and sports seem like a leisure activity that does nothing but ‘waste time’. But this pushing has a certain breaking point. This is what leads to depression. It is my request to all parents that every child is special. They just need a little support and attention. Talk to your children and try to understand them.
