PM Imran and Kashmir

The USA, being one of the most powerful countries, can play a critical role in resolving this dispute

KARACHI: Prime Minister Imran Khan deserves appreciation for convincing President Trump to mediate between India and Pakistan in order to resolve the decades-long Kashmir dispute. It was a commendable way in which Mr Khan presented Pakistan’s case and made efforts to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan. The two countries have been in conflict with each other over the Kashmir dispute since their independence. Several armed skirmishes and three wars have also taken place. Since 1989, Kashmiris have been involved in protest movements against Indian aggression. So far thousands of Kashmiris have sacrificed their lives in their efforts to throw off the Indian yoke. Despite the UN resolutions on holding a plebiscite, the Kashmir dispute remains unresolved.

Peace in the subcontinent is necessary for the progress of the region. However, it cannot be possible without resolving the Kashmir issue. If a plebiscite is not seen as an acceptable solution, then alternative strategies should be devised. Both the countries should initiate dialogues. Indian aggression in Kashmir has become every day affair. The USA, being one of the most powerful countries, can play a critical role in resolving this dispute.
