#RedForKashmir: Social media goes red in solidarity with Kashmir

Users are urging others to change their displays on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to red to show their support

KARACHI: Social media is turning into a sea of red to express their solidarity with the people of Indian Occupied Kashmir, as ongoing atrocities continue in the region.

Hashtags such as #RedForKashmir, #BleedForKashmir, #StandWithKashmir and #KashmirUnderThreat have been gaining traction on social media by users to bring more awareness of the situation.

Users have urged others to change their displays on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to red to show their support. "We done it for Sudan let’s support my hometown Kashmir too #RedForKashmir," one user tweeted recently.

Another user shared a post with facts of the situation in the region, including imposition of curfew, ban on public gatherings, detention of pro freedom leaders and cross-boarder shelling. "Help spread the word on Kashmir’s current mayhem," the tweet read.

"Twitter is so loud about humanity but where is this humanity for Muslims? In the last few days India has threatened genocide on Kashmir, they scrapped article 370 which protected Kashmir's status as a free state," another user wrote.

Instagram has also been showered with the red colour, with bloggers and users changing their profile pictures to express their solidarity.

"Change your profile to red, look up sources, and spread awareness. The end is near. We need to bring awareness. Kashmir has been in a bad condition for decades but congrats to our government that they made it worse. now in the name of "freedom" there will be bloodshed," an Indian Instagrammer shared.

"We all deserve to feel safe. Whether it’s at school, the grocery store, or in our home, our safety is important to us. So why is it that the people of Kashmir are not entitled to the same safety that we demand?" another wrote.

Authorities in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) placed large parts of the region under lockdown early on Monday while India sent in tens of thousands of additional troops and traded accusations of clashes with Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC).

Communications were cut, including private mobile networks, internet services and telephone landlines.

Soon after the tensions escalated, hashtag #StandWithKashmir started trending on Twitter and many came out to voice their support for Kashmiris.

Celebs such as Mawra Hocane, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Mahira Khan, Feroze Khan and others also raised their concerns over the ongoing situation.
