Poverty causes illiteracy

Letter August 04, 2019
It is the social responsibility of literate and rich people to make efforts to rid society of this problem

KARKI: Poverty is the state of having little or no money. It is the root cause of ignorance and frustrates all development efforts of the government and the community. It is the main cause of illiteracy across the world. Eradicating illiteracy in a country with a massive population is undoubtedly a gigantic task.

It is the social responsibility of all literate and rich people to make some concerted efforts to rid society of this problem. There are many children who wish to study. They dream of higher education but aren’t able to afford the economic expense.

Instead they have to either start working from a very young age as child labourers or find other means through illegal acts. In such a technologically-advanced and innovative world where anything is possible, no one can seem to come up with a viable solution to illiteracy or poverty. There is nothing any government in the world can do. Instead it has to be a collective effort. It is my plea to the world — we need to unite for the sake of humanity.
