Discrimination

Letter August 01, 2019
I urge the government to look into the situation in relation to discrimination in the country

ISLAMABAD: Despite the existence of several national and international legal guarantees, discrimination in Pakistan still persists. This problem is pervasive as it manifests in various forms within society. People here experience discrimination on the basis of caste, ethnicity, region, sect, gender, disability and health status, among others.

The Constitution of Pakistan is loud and clear about equality and equity. There are several articles and provisions which enunciate the general principles of equality and forbid classification or discrimination. But authorities behave in a manner which fuels perception of prejudice and discrimination.

Pakistan should make every effort to promote equality and dismantle discrimination. There should be adequate representations and bodies, guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan, to create new laws in order to implement equality effectively.

I urge the government to look into the situation in relation to discrimination in the country.
