Civic conditions in Karachi

Repairs done by authorities are temporary, and don’t hold for even a week

KARACHI: In January, I moved to Karachi. I was highly disappointed to see this once beautiful city slowly deteriorating. I would like to draw the attention of the authorities towards the poor condition of roads near my current residence in Block-15, Gulistan-e -Jauhar. Almost all the service roads in the area are badly damaged due to sewerage leaks. Repairs done by authorities are temporary, and don’t hold for even a week. The country seems to lack proper governmental structures.

In addition, garbage adds to the troubles of the residents of the area. The irony is that it is not only the authorities but also residents who are responsible for the accumulation of garbage on the streets. There is no sense of ownership. Because of the bad state of roads, accidents occur on a daily basis. I am afraid the monsoon rains will only make matters worse.

During my stay here, I’ve realised that the root cause of the problem is that no one is ready to take any responsibility of this city. All sorts of political and societal turmoil have affected the city tremendously. Unfortunately, there is no one person to blame. The burden rests on all of our shoulders.
