Learning and conscience

Letter July 29, 2019
In order to develop a conscience one must constantly be in the process of learning

SPAIN: In order to become a professional one must study for many years. A professional is someone who hones himself not only with books but also within society. One needs to have hardcore experience in their given field through practical application. This is how doctors, architects, electricians, mechanics, etc. are trained. If the nobility of a person is to become a ‘man of conscience’, it will be necessary to learn about it over the course of many years as it is an endless venture. The question of morality has always been a conundrum but one should not be ignorant as to ignore the effects his/her actions can have. There is a certain sense of responsibility that we, as humans, have on each other.

Education must start during childhood. It is what awakens reason in our mind. However, learning is endless. Therefore it is important to differentiate between the two. In order to develop a conscience one must constantly be in the process of learning. It is only then when a person is able to open himself up to the immense knowledge of the world. Some of the ways through which we could help educate our conscience are: the study of the moral law, a habit of thinking before acting, the will of searching for God, sincerity to ourselves, a request for help and advice to the people who could guide us. All of these traits not only help develop our conscience but in turn makes us more modest. Modesty is considered as the highest virtue in all religions. It is intrinsically tied with our conscience. In a world filled with greed and gluttony, individuals should start pondering and turn inwards, rather than finding an escape through material needs.

Our conscience helps us to act right in every circumstance and achieve happiness in this life and the other.
