FIR registered against actor Mohsin Abbas Haider for assaulting his wife

Wife lodged the report at the Defence C police station in Lahore after sharing her version on social media

KARACHI/LAHORE: The wife of actor-singer Mohsin Abbas Haider, Fatema Sohail, shocked social media this weekend after posting on Facebook that she has been allegedly suffering from domestic abuse at the hands of her husband.

Sohail claimed that the incidents started from November last year after she found out that Na Maloom Afraad actor was cheating on her. On Saturday, she submitted an application to register an FIR against Haider in the Defence C police station Lahore. The application was accepted and FIR for physically assaulting his wife was registered on Sunday, sources revealed.

"On 26th Nov 2018, I caught my husband cheating. When I confronted him, instead of being embarrassed he started Beating me. I was pregnant at that time," said Sohail.

After writing that she had to go to a doctor to make sure the baby is okay, Sohail tried to make the relationship work for the sake of the child, although she pointed out there may have been some "Societal pressure" involved as well.

Since the news broke, celebrities and concerned social media users alike have bombarded Twitter with the hashtag #StopDomesticAbuse in protest of Haider's alleged abuse.

Actor Mahira Khan has posted two tweets recently with an outlook of domestic violence and the effects it can have on children. "Sick to my stomach. What gives anybody the right to raise their hand on anyone? Nothing. No excuse. For eons now we have normalised abuse (of all kinds) and for the sake of our children this needs to stop," she wrote.

We need counsellors in schools for children going through issues at home (And truth be told we have all been there). Girls and boys in school should be taught about consent, domestic abuse, sexual abuse etc. These should be subjects as basic as math and science.

The #StopDomesticViolence hashtag is currently soaring on the top trending tweets list, already making it to 8th place. "No-one has a right to beat a woman," one user commented.

Others are calling for the industry to boycott Haider over the domestic violence allegations.

There is also an abundance of tweets with the hashtag pointing out the religious weight of beating a woman. "Islam is against abuse of any kind. Our Prophet (PBUH) is the best example of how he treated his wives and daughters," one user wrote.

The Express Tribune reached out to the actor for a comment but he did not respond. Sources, however, revealed that Haider is in the process of seeking legal help before he comes out with an official stance on the matter.
