Newly-converted Muslim girl moves SHC for protection

Two days after Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution for the protection of Hindu girls and against forced conversions

KARACHI: Two days after the Sindh Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution for the protection of Hindu girls and against forced conversions, a newly-converted Muslim girl along with her husband approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) to seek legal protection and security.

Noor Fatima (Payal Kumari) got married with a teacher, Kamran Soomro, from Thatta district after converting her religion. The couple has filed a petition for the protection, alleging their lives were under threat. The SHC directed the police to record the statement of the girl.

"I am an adult and have converted out of my own wish and happiness and married Soomro," Fatima told the court, adding that she and her husband were being threatened by family members.

According to the girl's parents, their 18-year-old daughter was allegedly abducted by her teacher. They said that the girl went for tuitions to Soomro on June 29 at 8am and did not come back to home till 2:30pm.
