CJP hails performance of model courts

Says pending murder, narcotics cases in 10 districts down to zero

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa has said that owing to the model courts, the number of pending murder and narcotics cases in 10 district have been reduced to zero in three months.

By the next month, the number of pending cases of murder and narcotics in 15 districts will be reduced to zero, the CJP remarked while hearing a petition against the acquittal of a murder accused.

Justice Khosa, who was presiding over a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, said that there was no witness to the murder while the murder weapon had also not been recovered. As such, the accusations stood on tenuous ground and dismissed the appeal.

The petitioner Bashir Ahmed stated that the police had become the complainant in the case on his behalf without taking his stance into account while asking for time to hire a lawyer.

Upon this, the CJP observed that no case would be delayed after being fixed for hearing while rejecting the appeal.

During the hearing, the prosecution lawyer praised the performance of model courts and said that the emphasis on speedy justice resulted in the case being decided in three months.

The CJP declared this as a welcome step that was an outcome of the hard work of the legal fraternity while acknowledging the performance of model courts.
