Deepika Padukone was my first choice for 'Rockstar,' reveals Imtiaz Ali

NEW DEHLI: Whenever Deepika Padukone and Imtiaz Ali come together, they create magic on screen, be it in Tamasha or the coming-of-age romance Love Aaj Kal.

If things had panned out the way director Ali wanted them to, Padukone would also have starred opposite Ranbir Kapoor in his 2011 magnum opus Rockstar, reported Hindustan Times.

Revealing that the Cocktail star was his first choice to play the leading lady in the film, Ali wrote on Padukone’s website, “She got off the car at the hotel porch and looked at me. I immediately knew that this is the girl I have come to meet. She also immediately knew that I am the director she had come to meet because she had those eyes, that looked as if they know.”

He added, “None of Deepika’s movies had released till then. I had come to meet her for Rockstar. I wanted her for Rockstar but the movie did not get made till many years later. I worked with her in other movies. Many things happened over many years at many places, all of which I might forget, but I will never forget the girl who stepped out of the car at the hotel and looked at me as if she knew.”

The role, however, eventually went to Nargis Fakhri, who made her Bollywood debut with the film. Rockstar gained commercial success and was also lauded by critics for the powerful performances by the lead actor Ranbir Kapoor.
