27 doctors complete EM training

The first batch of trainees comprised doctors from Karachi’s six largest emergency departments

KARACHI: As many as 27 doctors, trained in emergency medicine (EM), were awarded certificates by the Indus Health Network, during a graduation ceremony held on July 6, in Karachi. The first batch of trainees comprised doctors from six of Karachi's largest emergency departments, who began training in July last year.

In Pakistan, EM is still a developing field despite emergency conditions, such as acute cardiovascular disease, trauma and stroke, being one of the leading causes of death in the country. There are very few EM specialists in Pakistan and only nine institutes in the country offer residency training in EM. In order to promote education in EM and equip doctors in the area of emergency care, Indus Health Network initiated a one-year Certification Programme in EM, with the support of Habib Bank Foundation and Harvard Medical School's Centre for Global Health Delivery, Dubai.



The programme has been designed to offer both theoretical and practical learning, under the supervision of local and foreign instructors, including EM specialists from Canada, United States of America, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Malawi. The programme includes point-of-care ultrasound practice, flipped classroom sessions, workshops, weekly case-based discussions through a messaging application and employment of low-cost models for improving procedural skills.

The leadership of partnering institutions and EM specialists attended the ceremony.
