UN envoy lauds Pakistan's role in Afghan peace process

Secretary General’s Special Representative on Afghanistan calls on Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met on Monday UN Secretary General’s Special Representative (SRSG) on Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto on Monday where the visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan's role in the Afghan peace process.

"The foreign minister underscored Pakistan’s sincere and consistent efforts towards promoting peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The reconstruction and humanitarian activities of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) were also touched upon in a meeting held in Islamabad.

Qureshi underscored that Islamabad had always facilitated the Afghan peace process and and will continue to play its due role.

He also stressed that the ultimate arbiters of the future of Afghanistan were Afghans only.

"Pakistan will, therefore, continue emphasising the need for a result-oriented intra-Afghan dialogue," the communique read.

Qureshi underscored that Pakistan remained committed to the Afghan reconstruction and development efforts for long-term stabilisation of the country post-settlement.

The UN envoy also appreciated the steps Islamabad has taken to help in the Afghan reconstruction and development efforts.
