Population explosion

Letter July 05, 2019
We need to address this issue, as our country does not have resources to cater to such a fast-growing population

KARACHI: I recently saw an interview on a private news channel of a man with 33 children by three wives. The man has become quite popular because he plans on marrying again and creating a record by fathering 100 children in total. Five of his children have died at birth. This is a grotesque picture of our population explosion.

Drawing from this example, it can be concluded that illiteracy is the major cause of overpopulation in Pakistan. People, especially from the lower socio-economic class, do not understand the detrimental effects of overpopulation. There is a preference for large families in the rural areas, and due to the lack of awareness regarding family planning, people keep producing more children. We need to address this issue urgently, as our country does not have the resources to cater to such a fast growing population. I hope the authorities will take appropriate and timely action to control the rise in population.
