Day against Drug Abuse

Letter June 26, 2019
The government should tackle this issue by addressing the problem of unemployment

TURBAT: June 26th is observed as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day commemorates the United Nations’ decision to work towards a drug- free society by taking severe action against drug abuse.

Unfortunately, while this day is marked across the world. Balochistan continues to battle with its drug problem. Despite having a small population more than 280,000 people have fallen victim to drug abuse — the highest number in the country. Drug abuse has become a common practice in rural areas. One of the biggest reasons behind this is unemployment. Most of the youths involved in this have professional degrees and qualifications, but remain unemployed due to a lack of jobs. The stress and depression caused by this makes them resort to drugs. There are other factors accounting for an increase in the rate of drug abuse.

The government should tackle this issue by addressing the problem of unemployment. It should take strict action against drug dealers and peddlers. The government should take steps to rehabilitate drug addicts.
