Iran-US tensions

Letter June 25, 2019
The US should not mistake Iran for Iraq, Afghahistan or even Syria

KECH, BALOCHISTAN: If a war were to break out between Iran and the United States, the entire world will be impacted. The US backed out of the infamous Iran Deal, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, even though Iran was abiding by the treaty. Soon the US imposed sanctions on Iran, and Iran recently announced it would no longer participate in the JCPOA, if other signatory countries do not abide by the treaty and accept Iran’s other demands. In the past few weeks, the situation has worsened, as the US deployed two of its warships in the Strait of Hormuz. Two oil ships were attacked in the region’s waters and all the countries blamed Iran for it. Last week, Iran shot a US drone for invading its airspace. The US kept using war rhetoric against Iran. Given the recent developments, leaders from both countries have changed their stance by claiming neither wants war. Donald Trump even called off an air strike that was supposed to act as retaliation for the drone incident.

Even though military intervention has been controlled, the deployment of US troops in the region and the constant provocation by its leadership are not helping the situation. The US should not mistake Iran for Iraq, Afghahistan or even Syria. If a war were to take place, the entire world will be embroiled in it. Given Iran’s military capabilities, the US and its allies should avoid making unwise decisions.
