Decreasing knowledge

It is common knowledge that libraries play an important role in the development of a society

KARACHI: It is common knowledge that libraries play an important role in the development of a society. However, in Pakistan we see a decreasing trend of visiting libraries and seeking knowledge there. This has led to the expected social chaos, disregard for knowledge and education. This happens when a society distances itself from books. Many famous publishing houses have downed their shutters due to a lack of good, exceptional literature available for publishing; and because books that are published simply sit on shelves in bookstores, gathering dust as now few people are interested in books. As a result, most people are entirely ignorant of literature. They don’t know what classics are. This trend should be reversed.

We are witnessing an information explosion. People and even policymakers are not taking notice of the consequences of ignoring knowledge. People are now more interested in being on the net and mobile phone. We see people talking endlessly on phone and playing frivolous games on it. Now we see 26 identical people busy with mobile phone doing identical things. Talks on phones are usually endless and they are mostly about frivolous things and activities. This is a dangerous trend. This should be discouraged because this is producing dumb-mouthed people. They have lost all human emotions and have become stones and wood. These people are not aware what is happening in the world, in their country, in their cities and even in their localities. What a dumb generation! This is lamentable.
