UVAS, US officials discuss food safety issues

Both sides explore possibilities of joint ventures

LAHORE: The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and officials from the United States of America (USA) discussed food safety issues at a meeting held at the UVAS City Campus on Thursday.

Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Masood Rabbani and the US Embassy Islamabad Agricultural Counselor Casey E Bean co-chaired the meeting.

The meeting discussed various aspects of food safety issues, possible solutions, safety standards and ways to ensure safe food availability for consumers. The food safety management, under the umbrella of a one health approach related to the livestock sector, was also discussed in the meeting.

The UVAS food safety experts spoke about food safety systems which could be adopted to improve and ensuring that livestock food products are safe and healthy for eating.

The pro-VC said UVAS was providing different testing facilities for meat and other feed analysis, using the latest processing and packaging technologies. The technologies included vacuum packing and modified atmospherics packing to keep meat fresh and tasty for a longer time.

The university is also offering various degrees and training programmes on food safety, feedlot fattening, value chain and proper food processing, etc.

The US delegation also visited the Department of Meat Science and Technology where they saw slaughtering facilities, electric stimulation, meat preserving, chilling and packaging systems.
