LAHORE: Pakistan can take a quantum leap in export promotion by upgrading its marine fisheries sector in collaboration with China, observed Pak-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) President Shah Faisal Afridi. Addressing a meeting of PCJCCI’s think tank on Tuesday, he pointed out that Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) had developed a viable strategy for developing marine fisheries sector but it could not be implemented because of the political turmoil. “Now, keeping in mind the marine potential of Gwadar and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the marine fishing sector needs urgent upgrade for which Chinese methods of fishing and the fish processing technology can be highly useful,” he added. The chairman offered to attract Chinese expertise and investment in fisheries sector provided that the government assured support coupled with favourable policies. He informed that some Chinese companies had already evinced their interest to enter into joint ventures for making modern boats, sheds and ice for marine fisheries.
