Water shortage in Karachi

Letter June 19, 2019
I urge the authorities concerned to have mercy on the people and supply them with piped water

KARACHI: The issue of water scarcity has not been resolved, despite it occurring in 65% of the areas of Karachi. Water is a basic right and need of every human and living being, hence this issue must be resolved in a permanent manner. Unfortunately, the authorities in charge of the water and sewerage system of the city have not taken any action, even though the citizens continue to pay the water bill in full. Shortage of water has been increasing by the day and the tanker mafia’s business is flourishing. They don’t follow the rates written on their tankers and quote prices according to their whim. Given the acute shortage of water in the city, it is worth asking — where do this tanker mafia get millions of gallons of water from? I urge the authorities concerned to have mercy on the people and supply them with piped water. Now the situation with regard to water shortage in Karachi is very bad. People are paying highly inflated prices for it; they go to far-off places to get a few cans of the precious commodity; they are even begging for it. Teary-eyed women are seen wailing while asking for water!
