Region will remain unstable till Kashmir issue is resolved: Gen Wynne

Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee said as long as Kashmir remains unresolved, the region will remain unstable.

ISLAMABAD: The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Khalid Shameem Wynne said on Wednesday that as long as the Kashmir issue remains unresolved , the subcontinent region will remain unstable.

Wynne was speaking at a convocation ceremony of the National Security and War Course in Islamabad.

He said it is pivotal that India and Pakistan work to find a solution to the Kashmir dispute.

Yesterdat, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed hope that Pakistan will "leave Kashmir alone", as it has its own share of internal problems to deal with.

In a meeting with editors of a select five Indian newspapers, he claimed that Pakistan had not done much against terrorism and needs to do more.

Singh said India is not a big player in Pakistan - but whatever its role-engagement is a commitment to our shared geography.

Today, General Wynne also added that Pakistan's armed forces have taken up the challenge to combat terrorism.

Chandler | 13 years ago | Reply @Awed Don’t you think Kashmiris should decide the fate of Kashmir? Nope, Indians will decide the fate of Kashmir. That means ALL Indians. From North, South, East and West. If some Kashmiris want to join up with Pakistan, they are free to do so! They just need to pack up their bags. BTW, you Pakistanis(of Afghan, Central Asian, Persian, Arabic, Turkic descent) are occupying our land. That land belongs to the original inhabitants of the Indian Sub-continent. And by our Gods, we will take it back - start counting your days.

India cannot be a Democracy and a tyrant at the same time. The basic framework exists in India for a better Kashmir and we are seeing that now. In all the wars the 2 countries have fought not once has the stronger Country attacked, but it was always the weaker one which acted first. So, how is this similar to a rape? Pakistan is the one which trained militants to fight India, not the other way around. India is a Democracy, has checks and balances and the power rests with the people. Or, the atrocities committed by the Paksitan-supported Taliban on Afghans? Or,on the kind of brutality the Pakistani security forces are perpetrating on the Balochis? Or, the Terror that Iranians are facing from Pakistani based Terrorists? The trend now is- JUST KASHMIR, forget, for instance, Xinjiang. Why? Has it something to do with the Chinese giving tonnes of money to you guys? China doesn't hesitate to kill and its actions rarely come in the limelight, that cannot happen in India. It is too free and people have rights. Dont you think at this point of time Xinjiang and Balochistan are bigger problems than the free Kashmiris?

India will not budge and you can continue to delude yourself that Pakistan will make her bend! No skin off our noses: you may lose yours at the end of the day. But, it is your nose. You are the one to decide to keep it or lose it!

Naveed | 13 years ago | Reply Yousaf Khalid has a point here.....when we were just kids i dnt remmeber there used to be so much emphasis on " safar ki dua" nor was there so much insistence on inshAllah and MashAllah..(note my turning caps on for the word Allah)...nor were there so many Azaans blowing out from horrendous microphones so many all at the same time. nor were there so many beards and shalwars tucked over the ankles...nor so many burqas...nor were there any partitions between men and women during marriages...nor were there so many ijtemas....sunni barailvi, wahabi, deobandi, let alone shia distinctions....we are a completely transformed society to what we actually started off with....but having said that...Kashmir is and will remain the touchstone of any conflict resolution in the region.

India is growing leaps and bounds. 2) For India the Kashmir is already resolved and being the dominant force in control, it is satisfied with the status quo, hence, unlikely it'll change it position. 3) Pakistan is rated as a failed state primarily because of its obsession its Kashmir, so it is imperative that it make a radical change in its stand then expect the dominant force in Kashmir to make one, which is quite unrealistic. So, Pakistan is the one which wants a change in the Status quo, but unable to change it as it is NOT the dominant power. 4) So, in this scenario, who is the loser? Pakistan. Who should stop this self-destrucive obsession? You guessed it right. Pakistan. So, the General should rethink his position. Unlikely, I know.

That clearly indicates that the Pak army does not want to kill the golden egg laying Kashmir. Poor Pakistan and Kashmiris are sucked into never ending ghairat stories and Pak losing its economy on the way.

My God/Allah/Khuda is not mis-informed that it would not know what I am talking about? The irony is we still have national anthem ending with Khuda-e-zuljalal. What would they do to Islamize the anthem? Was Hafiz Jalandheri not a Muslim? Was he an ignorant fool? Our identity is Pakistan, where people of many different religions live as equal Pakistanis, just like Quaid had said in his August 1947 speech in Karachi. When somebody asks us about our identity we tell them Pakistani American. Muslim American would not identify me correctly, as there are Muslims from all over the world. I am proud to be a Pakistani and would remain so for the rest of my life. We do not need a certification from a mullah to be a true Pakistani. In fact these fanatics called Sir Syed Khan, Mr. Jinnah and nay other reformer kafirs. Can anybody explain to me that while the religious fanaticism in Pakistan is increasing in the last 30 years, the corruption is also increasing along with all other social evils? How is that possible? More people following religion should improve the situation not the other way around? Khuda-e-wadaho lasharik knows our intentions very well and we can worship in any language except the language of hate.

I absolutely agree with Yusuf Khalid, it is, without a doubt the alien version of Islam first imported by ZAB and infused fully by Zia is our problem. I am a proud Pakistani first and then a faithful Muslim exactly like any Saudi or Kuwaiti your heroes. Now coming back to General Wynne's statement, what else he could have said that we are a basket case owing to our own faults, no his fat Paycheck and all other goodies come from protecting and enhancing the image of army by making irrelevant statements from time to time. He has over the years mastered like other general officers, the art of lying to the nation and creating all kind of myths and unfounded fears and justifying them when ever caught red handed. I want to tell him one thing General Sahib we may not look as distinguished as you guys do in the Uniform but we are not dumb, we understand you MO better than you do. It is time for you guys to cut the Army to an affordable size admit your faults and mistakes and be accountable to the elected government. I know it is not too much too ask because you have not only failed the Nation but also bankrupted it.

Sameer | 13 years ago | Reply What he means to say is "Pakistan needs an excuse to have strategic assets and Kashmir is the current excuse, tomorrow it will be Balochistan and Afghanistan, or something else". Making the LOC the final border is the simplest and most peaceful solution. The sad part is the Pakistani military will lose all its reason for existence so they have no interest in allowing that to happen.

yousuf khalid | 13 years ago | Reply The kashmir issue is not the problem,islamic fascism is the real problem for us.i've seen my country going from a tolerant,vibrant,open society into the paradise for islamic extremists.in my university days our female colleagues were free and independent and one didn't get to see this many hijabis and burka girls as my children see today in their universities.we used to have 'khuda hafiz' ,but today everyone is forced to say 'allah hafiz',if we don't use 'inshallah,mashallah' in every sentence we are considered a kafir. All this mindnumbing insistence on religious rituals was not to this extent in before zia.He truly ruined this country.his islamization campaign has led to a new generation of children whose first loyalty is not to pakistan but sadly its to islam.We are pakistanis first and foremost,anything else is secondary. i would hope our govt. focuses on battling the islamic fascists in our society. kashmir is india's headache no ours,the indians should give the kashmiris independence because that is what the majority of kashmiris want.
