Uncleared garbage

Letter June 18, 2019
Both people and the authorities are to blame for this sorry state of affairs

KARACHI: I am writing on behalf of the residents of Block-6, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, regarding the problem of garbage that we face on a daily basis. Garbage in our area is not being lifted due the shortage of garbage collectors and cleaners. The household garbage, along with some commercial waste of shops in the market area, is disposed of on the footpath of the main road. The pile of garbage has been gradually increasing by the day and is now covering half of the road. The area has a constant bad odour and some people burn the garbage at night which results in air pollution and bad odour. This road acts as the main artery for our area, and the blockage created by the garbage is affecting our daily commute as well as quality of life. Heaps of garbage are seen lying on roads in most places in Karachi. Both people and the authorities are to blame for this sorry state of affairs. People throw trash on roads and footpaths and at other places outside their homes.

I urge the authorities of the waste management department to do the needful at the earliest.
