Parliament power to amend constitution cannot be unlimited: CJ

ISLAMABAD: The hearing of petitions challenging the 18th amendment in the Supreme Court was adjourned on Wednesday.

Head of the 17 member bench, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, remarked that the parliament's power to amend the constitution can not be unlimited.

Counsel for the Supreme Court Bar Association, Hamid Khan in his arguments said parliament's power to amend the constitution is limited. He said limits have not been documented, and instead exist in oral form.

Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman stated that the judiciary can not be free until judges are independent. He added that a referendum can be held for a mandate.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in his remarks also said that elected parliamentarians will have to work as per the constitution.
