Rising street crimes

Letter June 14, 2019
It is important to probe the root cause behind crimes

KARACHI: Street crimes in Karachi are once again on the rise after months of hibernation. People are again threatened by Hell’s Angels, that is, the gangs out on motorcycles. People are being robbed of their valuables both during the day and at night. Criminals are roaming the streets freely, in search of targets, and even residential areas are no longer safe against mugging. According to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee’s recent report, an increase in cases of mugging has been recorded. Criminal activities are reported to have grown like a disease in Karachi threatening the life and property of people. The law-enforcement agencies should take decisive action to uproot criminal activities from the cities, so people may feel safe.

It is also important to probe the root cause behind such crimes. One reason for the increasing rate of thefts, robberies and mugging is the population explosion and the resultant unemployment. In the absence of jobs, unemployed people resort to crime. It is an old adage that poverty breeds crime, hence a holistic approach is required to eliminate crimes.
