Street crimes

Letter June 08, 2019
It is now up to the law enforcers to draw up an effective strategy to combat crimes

KARACHI: Street crimes in Karachi have become a common issue these days and almost every other person has to tell a tale relating to it. Even youngsters are now involved in such activities and the reason behind it is poverty and illiteracy that lead people down this path.

Almost every other day, we hear news about a man being robbed or even killed for small amounts of money. The people carrying out these crimes do so because they are unable to meet even their basic needs. Hence, they would rather commit a crime than die of hunger. Unemployment also contributes to this. Considering the ever-increasing inflation, street crimes and all other kinds of crimes are likely to rise. It is now up to the law enforcers to draw up an effective strategy to combat crimes. The government should strive to lower inflation and control price rise. It should also draw up plans to provide people with jobs. The issue needs a holistic approach. While we need to work on making the city safe and secure, we also need to address the root causes of these crimes. I hope that the government and the police force take some serious steps against these crimes so that people can live peacefully.
