KU’s Academic Council approves new admission policy

Universities should design curricula to prepare students to face present-day challenges, says VC

KARACHI: The Academic Council of the University of Karachi has approved the admission policy for MPhil, PhD, MS and MD programmes, for the academic session 2019.

The policy was approved during an Academic Council meeting, headed by KU Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, at the Arts Auditorium on Wednesday.

Presiding over the meeting, Dr Iraqi said that the syllabus and curriculum of schools, colleges and universities must be improved and updated in accordance with modern-day needs.

He said that keeping in view the political and socio-economic situation of Pakistan and country’s increasing population, universities should design curricula to prepare students to face present-day challenges and have a bright future.

“The world is changing rapidly and that’s why we should adopt all relevant changes to compete with the rest of the world,” he said.

Dr Iraqi said that education offered at universities has a direct link with industries and trade bodies and he believes that academic councils of universities could play an important role in assisting the Higher Education Commission in this regard.

He said that the country’s youth would become useful citizens if higher educational institutes equip them with the right skills and provide them with a platform to enhance their abilities and skills.

Meanwhile, KU’s Academic Council, through one of its resolutions, nominated Dr SM Taha, from the Department of History, as a representative of the Academic Council on the Board of Governors of the varsity’s Applied Economics Research Centre, for three years. It also nominated Dr Anila Amber Malik from the Department of Psychology as a representative of the Academic Council on the Affiliation Committee for a period of two years.

Dr Muhammad Haris Shoaib from the Department of Pharmaceutics, Dr Maqsood Ali Ansari from the Department of Genetics and Dr Solaha Rahman from the Department of Zoology were also nominated to represent the varsity’s Academic Council on the Board of Faculty of Law for three years.
