Animal rights

Letter May 27, 2019
If we allow insects to live a ‘free life’, then they will completely destroy the crops

KECH: Apropos a letter titled ‘Animal rights’ published The Express Tribune on 22nd May, the writer said “animals and insects should be free to live their short life freely.” I would like to disagree with this statement. As a fellow resident of Balochistan, I am aware of the weather conditions that resulted in an increased population of insects, particularly locusts, in Balnigwar and Dasht. These have damaged the crops considerably. Agriculture is the only source of income for many in the province. If we allow insects to live a ‘free life’, then they will completely destroy the crops and months of hard work will go to waste. Income will be greatly affected, and people will be unable to provide their families with even three meals a day, let alone providing education and healthcare. While I do not support torturing or hunting animals for leisure, we should be able to take action against them if they pose a serious risk to our livelihood.
