Punjab govt to hold elections for panchayats by 2020

Work on the delamination of local bodies to begin early next month

LAHORE: The Punjab government is planning to hold elections of Panchayats and neighbourhood councils by June 2020 for which work on the delamination of local bodies will begin early next month.

These views were stated by the Punjab Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Local Government Minister Raja Basharat. He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting for the Cabinet Committee on the transition of the local bodies system on Wednesday.

The meeting was also attended among others by the Provincial Minister for Transport Jahanzeb Khichi, Provincial Minister for C&W Asif Nakai and officers of concerned departments. Secretary Local Government Saif Anjum and Additional Secretary Local Government Shahid Zaman delivered a detailed presentation on the road map of the transition process.

Raja Basharat said that the new local government system was a reflection of prime minister’s vision and assurance of the transfer of power to the grassroots level.

He directed the concerned departments to make efficient efforts to succeed the new local government system.
