Killing our planet

Letter May 20, 2019
The Earth is at its limit now and we cannot continue with it if we want to sustain life on this planet

KARACHI: The online streaming website, Netflix, recently released a show called ‘Our Planet’. The show is about the spectacular wildlife we have been blessed with and the purpose of all of nature’s bounty. It aims to link everything together to warn us of how our planet is dying – the animal populations are decimating and glaciers are melting-- at a very fast pace. The recent report on biodiversity by the UN also mirrors this. According to the report, we have over-farmed our land and over-extracted our resources. The Earth is at its limit now and we cannot continue with it if we want to sustain life on this planet.

We can already see the impact of this in Karachi. A drive through the Karachi’s Korangi and Malir areas is reflective of the severity of the situation. The once flourishing Malir river – the reason why Malir’s soil is famous for being fertile and a source of part of the city’s vegetables – is mostly gone now. Apart from the small and spaced out streams of water flowing under the bridge leading to Korangi, most of the water has dried up. This shows the extent to which we have used up our resources and harmed the natural phenomena, causing this to happen. We must take action before we are doomed!
