Ban on plastic bags

Letter May 19, 2019
As responsible citizens, we should stop using all plastic products

KARACHI: The Sindh Cabinet took a historic decision in November 2018 to ban the use of polythene bags in the province. The ban was to cover the import, production, stockpile, sale and distribution of plastic bags.

The chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa followed suit, and banned the use of plastic bags in his province in March 2019. Later on, the Cantonment Board of Clifton (CBC) in Karachi declared that plastic bags will be eliminated from its jurisdiction and the CBC would assist traders and residents by supplying cloth bags.

We still have to see complete implementation of the decision of the Sindh government. Plastic is non-biodegradable and every bag or spoon, or even a packet of chips we use will remain in landfills for hundreds of years before it decomposes.

While ideally we should be recycling our plastic waste, we do not have the facilities to do so, nor is the government interested in creating them. Therefore, we as responsible citizens should stop using all plastic products to save ourselves from the menace that is plastic.
