Population control

Letter May 18, 2019
As the country's population increased from 3 crore to 20+ crore between 1951 and 2018

KARACHI: So far Pakistan’s family planning programme has failed to give the desired result, although the Family Planning Association of Pakistan was set up as early as 1952. We have seen our population increasing from 3 crore to 20+ crore between 1951 and 2018.

The urgent need for revamped family planning service delivery cannot be understated. Although 96 per cent of married Pakistani women are aware of at least one modern contraceptive method, only 22 per cent are currently using modern contraceptives, whereas another eight per cent use less effective traditional methods.

Women understand the famous ‘bachchay dau hi achhay’  ‘aur wo bhi mann kay sachchay’ campaign as the state’s attempt to control population explosion.

The policy is also short on innovative solutions to address myriad shortfalls in service delivery,

Pakistan’s rising population is the root cause of many problems from unemployment to inflation, crime to militancy. One hopes that controlling population remains high at top of the government’s priority policy.
