Producing 100,000 jobs on the basis of merit

HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has recently approved the Kamyab Jawan Programme (Youth programme) under which the country's youth will be given 100,000 jobs on the basis of merit.

The prime minister has approved Rs100 billion for the programme which is a good sign. The United Nations had also announced 30 million US dollars for this youth programme earlier this year. I believe that the millions of well-educated unemployed youth across the country will benefit from the programme.

At present, it is estimated that the country's only 39 per cent of the youth is employed whereas 61pc are jobless. If the current federal government fails to fulfil its promise of giving 100,000 jobs to deprived and depressed youth, it would be difficult for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to win the next general elections.

It is time the government provided jobs to unemployed youth on the basis of merit. Jobs and economic security are essential for peace and tranquillity. Jobless and frustrated youth take to crime and drug addiction and this leads to a vicious cycle of evil. So in order to prevent social evils the youth should be engaged in productive activities.
