Morality in Ramazan

Letter May 07, 2019
Shopkeepers in other countries reduce prices on the occasion of religious and other festivals

KARACHI: Ramazan is one of the holiest months for Muslims. Everyone enjoys this time as they make an effort to purify their hearts and reap the rewards of this blessed month. Work and school timings are altered during the month, yet people are able to manage their hectic lives while fasting, and things fall into a schedule in a few days, automatically. However, despite the spiritual rejuvenation and bliss of Ramazan, people also worry as to how they would manage the high expenses that come with preparing for the month. Many wish to celebrate the month with lots of dishes and dinner parties, but are deterred by prohibitive prices. Moreover, many shop owners increase the prices of foodstuffs and other items without approval from the authorities. I demand of the government to take notice of the unnatural price hike and apply other appropriate measures to facilitate people. Everyone should also treat this month as a source of blessing and think about the less privileged — who also deserve to celebrate this month — rather than focusing on their profits alone. It is generally seen that shopkeepers, especially fruit sellers, sell goods at abnormally high prices making them go beyond the purchasing capacity of those with limited income. On the other hand, shopkeepers in other countries reduce prices on the occasion of religious and other festivals.
