Provinces urged to improve driving licence mechanism

Traffic police from across the country meet to discuss guidelines for driving licence

ISLAMABAD: Traffic police from across the country met to discuss a standard procedure for issuing driving licences.

The one-day Stakeholder Agencies Review Workshop was held on the directions of Federal Minister for Communications Murad Saeed.

Theme of the workshop was Standardisation and Harmonisation of Drivers Licence Issuance Mechanism by National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) and National Transport Research Centre (NTRC) at Serene Hotel Islamabad.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and NTU International Consultancy Services provided necessary collaboration for commencement of the event. Representatives from Islamabad Traffic Police, Punjab Traffic Police, Sindh Traffic Police, K-P Transport Department, Balochistan Traffic Police, Gilgit Baltistan Traffic Police, Punjab Transport Department, NHRSC, AJK Traffic Police and ADCR participated in the workshop and shared their inputs and opinions.

NHMP IGP Allah Dino Khawaja inaugurated the workshop and welcomed all the participants. The Guidelines for Drivers Licencing have been produced through an assessment of the current drivers licencing situation in Pakistan, consideration of Pakistan’s 2030 regional and global road safety commitments, benchmarking of global good practice and consultation with NHMP, provincial and territory driver licensing authority (DLA) within Punjab, K-P, Sindh, and ICT and other key stakeholders.

Secretary Communications Shoaib Siddiqui closed the workshop with the concluding remarks that the provinces are required to play their vital role in the improvement of road safety particularly enhancing the mechanism of driving licences issuance.

Finally firm recommendations for the improvement in the issuance of driving licenses in the whole country are framed for consideration of government.
