KARACHI: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will convene on May 5 to sight the Ramazan moon in Karachi, Express News reported.

According to sources, the meeting will be convened at the Meteorological Complex in Karachi on Sunday evening. The meeting will be headed by Mufti Muneebur Rehman, the committee's chairman. Zonal committee meetings will also convene in Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar.

The decision on the start date for the holy month will be taken after testimonies are received from all over the country.

Ramazan likely to commence on May 7

The Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council earlier predicted on Tuesday that the Ramazan moon is likely to be sighted on May 6 and the holy month is expected to commence on May 7.

The Council’s Secretary-General Aijaz Khalid Mufti had said “The new moon does not show up until it is 19 hours of age and the difference between sunset and moonrise is 40 minutes. Therefore, the moon’s distance from the earth should be at an angle of six degrees and of the moon to the sun should be 10 degrees.”
