Pakistani dramas

Unfortunately, the quality of our dramas has declined over the years

PESHAWAR: Gone are the days when we would see dramas with strong intelligent characters with a witty sense of humour in literary Urdu. The golden era of Pakistani dramas is always cherished as PTV would produce back-to-back hits, all with a different storyline. Dramas like ‘Dhuwan’, ‘Alpha Bravo Charlie’ and ‘Dhoop Kinaray’ were classics with strong characters and dialogues. All these dramas were made for families and were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. Whether the characters were rich or poor, both were depicted as respectful and well-read. More importantly, they depicted women as strong and independent with a voice.

Unfortunately, the quality of our dramas has declined over the years. Every channel airs dramas with the same story of emotional and physical abuse and people shouting and cussing. Women are shown as helpless and at the mercy of their families. Every female character is being slandered, slapped, divorced and kicked out of her house while she is left speechless. Relationships are shown as fickle where the husband is always suspicious of the wife and constantly berating her. All our dramas show oppression and the worst face of society, while comedy has become synonymous with vulgarity. One can see a sharp decline in the shows as well as the intelligence of the audience as nothing of substance is shown across the channels.
