Cleanliness is next to godliness

Overflowing trash bins that are surrounded by garbage, flies and cows is a common sight in our country

KARACHI: As citizens, we are responsible for taking care of Pakistan. This includes keeping our streets, environment and surroundings clean.

Overflowing trash bins that are surrounded by garbage, and flies and cows around them is a common sight in our country, especially in Karachi.

We could blame the municipal corporation, our next door neighbour or even the quality of dustbins for the mess. However, as citizens we must admit our own mistakes and not shy away from our responsibility to keep our neighborhoods clean. We need the active support of the city’s residents, businesses and visitors to help keep our city clean.

Even if we follow simple steps such as taking our food wrappings, drink containers, newspapers and other litter to our home and then disposing it of in a proper way we can curb the problem of street litter.

We can also put out our domestic waste including glass and recyclables on the day the garbage collectors come, instead of dumping our garbage in empty plots. This will avoid soiling different waste streams, over-filling bins, or leaving additional side-waste that can quickly become street litter, and then spread germs. We start from our house then work to make a pleasant society.
