From healer to killer

Letter April 24, 2019
These incidents prove that no victim can be blamed for wearing certain clothes, or being provocative

KARACHI: It seems like we are stuck in a cycle of one bad news after the other. The case of Asmat, a resident of Ibrahim Hyderi in Karachi, who went to the Sindh Government Hospital in Korangi to get her toothache examined, but was given an injection, allegedly raped and then killed by the hospital staff is another case of criminal negligence in our healthcare system. We are living in a society where doctors and their assistants, the so-called ‘healers’, have turned into rapists and murderers. These incidents prove that no victim can be blamed for wearing certain clothes, or being provocative. Instead, people with a criminal mind gauge factors such as the girl’s humble financial background, which would make it easy for them to commit a crime and get away with it. Currently, the doctor in question is still at large and one can only hope that he is caught soon and brought to justice. I request the Prime Minister, the President and the Chief Justice of Pakistan to intervene in this grave issue, and dispense justice to a poor family, and that the PMDC becomes stricter and more vigilant regarding the medical malpractices.
