Firecrackers

Letter April 24, 2019
I request all parents to guide their children against the use of firecrackers

KARACHI: We all have noticed this growing trend of firecrackers and aerial firing marking occasions like weddings, besides religious events like Shab-e-Baraat. Using firecrackers has no roots in Islamic tradition. Firecrackers harm and disturb the residents of the neighbourhood, besides the animals. They also affect the environment because of the pollution they cause. We have started borrowing practices from other communities, such as the use of fireworks and firecrackers on Diwali, without considering that many people celebrating Diwali are also against the use of fireworks and firecrackers because of the danger they pose to people and to the environment. Moreover, the sudden loud noise can offset panic and anxiety amongst many, while triggering allergies and asthma attacks in others due to the smoke they produce. Infants, elderly and animals get extremely disturbed because of the noise caused. I request all parents to guide their children against the use of firecrackers and for all residents to raise their voice against their use.
