Inculcating civic sense

Even our well-known personalities sometimes show a complete disregard for civic sense

LARKANA: I have noticed that our people lack civic sense. Many do not take it seriously. People today are so focused towards their individual goals that civic sense as an ethic has turned into more of a trouble.

A lot of people think that civic sense is just about keeping the roads and public spaces clean. However, it also includes basic ethics such as respect for our fellow citizens, and displaying good manners in our everyday interactions. Crude jokes on race, favouritism and discrimination are all examples of a lack of it.As we become intolerant of each other’s cultures and backgrounds, our need for civic sense increases. Moreover, our neighbourhoods are unclean, and nobody takes the initiative to maintain cleanliness either. If everyone were to take responsibility, we would have a model state and society. We should not make excuses, and instead, should be compassionate and cooperate with another and work towards social harmony.
Even our well-known personalities sometimes show a complete disregard for civic sense. They organise public events and leave heaps of litter. We should inculcate civic sense at every level. It is essential for progress.
