Representatives of the people

Letter April 17, 2019
The members of Parliament should set aside their differences and act as a representative of the people

KARACHI: Parliament is the federal and supreme legislative body of Pakistan. The House has the leading majority party and the opposition. According to the Constitution, the parliamentarians are elected to raise public issues in the House, and to resolve them by enacting laws. However, for the past 10 years, successive governments and the opposition have continuously resorted to playing the blame game on the House floor. Years have gone by, and many legislations that would benefit the citizens have either not been passed or have been delayed due to this politics. Time and resources have been wasted as matters have been debated to no end purely for the sake of opposition, and many a time it has resulted in walkouts or scuffles. Instead of wasting time on an individual personality or party, the House should focus on Pakistan’s internal and external issues. Matters should be debated without taking recourse to filibustering and other delaying tactics. Debates should result in productive outcomes. The members of Parliament, both from the ruling and opposition parties, should set aside their differences and act as representative of the people, which they are supposed to be. Members of Parliament should behave responsibly. The examples they set are followed by the masses. Examples are always set from above.
